The Centre was established as a Commonwealth Special Research Centre in 2000 and is funded under the Australian Research Council's Special Research Centre scheme.

The purpose of CAPPE is to conduct ground-breaking research, provide policy input and promote community discussion and professional dialogue in relation to these and other important and pressing matters of public and political concern.

 







 

CAPPE constitutes the largest concentration of philosophers working on applied philosophy and public ethics in Australia, and one of the largest such concentrations in the international philosophical community.

The Centre is hosted by Charles Sturt University with its other partners being The Australian National University and The University of Melbourne

.

The Centre's research is organised around six integrated research areas, each of which has one or more 'core' projects:

· The Ethics of Sex Selection (core)

Research Area 4: IT and Nanotechnology: Ethics of Emergent Technology

· The Precautionary Principle in Nanotechnology (core)

Research Area 5: Ethical Issues in Political Violence and State Sovereignty

· Morality of "Dirty Hands' as an Issue in Political Leadership (core)
· The Morality of "New Wars" (core)

Research Area 6: Welfare Ethics
· Rights of the Child (core)
· Obligations of Individual Citizens of Wealthy Nations in Relation to International Poverty (core)
