How do I apply?
This is an exchange program for students with an interest in ethics and human rights who wish to further their study in another part of the world. Eight universities, four in Australia and four in Europe, have agreed, with the assistance of funding from the European Union and the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST), to begin exchanging students.
Financial assistance will be provided to 40 Australian students to undertake a portion of their degrees on exchange in Europe and 40 European students to undertake a portion of their degrees on exchange in Australia. Exchanges are open to students studying philosophy, including political theory, normally going into their third or fourth year. Unfunded places are also available.
Do I have to be an enrolled student of one of the participating universities to participate in the exchange program?
Yes. But if you are particularly interested in the program, you could consider changing your enrolment to one of our partner universities.
Do I have to have any experience in ethics and human rights?
Not necessarily. The exchanges are open to students who have completed, or are doing, some philosophy or political theory courses or subjects and who have completed at least a year of university study. Preference will be given to students who are specialising in philosophy or political theory and who will have completed two years of study at the time of the exchange.
A cash stipend for Australian students of approximately A$7,600. For European students, the cash stipend is approximately €5,200 and UK students approximately £3,500. Tuition fees at the host university are also waived under the scholarship.
What does the scholarship cover?
There are no requirements stipulating what the scholarship stipend must be used to pay. You can use it to pay for your airfare and your accommodation or to cover your living costs when you arrive. You will need to factor it into your total financial budget for your exchange visit to ensure that you have the money to cover your travel costs, one off costs and costs for the period of your exchange visit.
How will I receive the scholarship?
The scholarship stipend will be paid to you by your home university, once you have been accepted by the host university, according to its normal policies and procedures.
No. All of our partner universities, however, provide you with assistance in acquiring accommodation. Some guarantee university managed accommodation or will give preference to Network Scholarship recipients.
Are there any other costs I need to meet?
Yes. Apart from the airfare and accommodation, you will also need to consider the cost of books, visas, travel and medical insurance, transport, living costs (such as food, electricity, gas, telephone, etc) and spending money. How long is an exchange visit?
Approximately six months or one semester. This depends on the dates for courses/subjects offered by each of the universities.

Can I go on exchange if I don’t win a Network Scholarship?
Yes, BUT only with the approval of your home university and the host university.
Can I choose to which university I go on exchange?
You can nominate your preferences, but the Network Committee will decide to which institution you will go based on the demand from all of the applicants. It will endeavour to give applicants their first choice but that may not be possible in all cases.
There will be three periods in which you can go on exchange:
- the first half of 2008;
- the second half of 2008; and
- the first half of 2009.
Exact dates will depend on the start and finish dates for courses/subjects at each university.
Do I have to do particular courses/subjects?
Yes. You must undertake a full-time load (30 ECTS credits*) for the duration of your exchange. That may be made up entirely of courses/subjects identified as falling within the Ethics, Human Rights and Institutions stream, but at least 22.5 ECTS* must be courses/subjects identified as falling within that stream. The remainder may be made up of other courses/subjects offered by the host institution if you have the approval of your home university.
*ECTS = European Credit Transfer System
In what language are courses/subjects conducted?
All courses/subjects in the Ethics, Human Rights and Institutions stream are conducted in English. Other courses/subjects you choose to make up your fulltime load may be conducted in the language of the host university country.
Will the courses/subjects I do on exchange count towards my degree at my home institution?
Yes.
Can I work while I am on an exchange?
This will vary from university to university and from country to country. You would need to consult with the relevant administrative officers at your host university.
What are the closing dates for applications?

* for exchanges commencing beginning of 2009 - 31 May, 2008
