Lancaster is one of the leading higher education institutons of the northwest of England and in the top 10 research universities of the United Kingdom. The University has an especially strong reputation in Management and in Social Sciences, within which Philosophy is located. Student life is organised around colleges which all students report as being one of the most attractive aspects of their time here . The campus itself is a seIf-contained 'village' with many facilities and is located about 3.5 miles from the centre of Lancaster and easily accessible by regular buses. Lancaster itself is a historic city with its own castle (now a prison!), cathedral, and cobbled back streets, but it is also a vibrant student-friendly city filled with pubs, clubs, theatres, markets and shops. Most of the city centre is pedestrianised and in addition to the usual high street retailers, there is a shopping arcade and a large indoor market which contains a fish market selling fresh local catches from Morecambe Bay. Lancaster is surrounded by some of the most beautiful - and readily accessible - countryside in the United Kingdom - from Morecambe Bay in the west, to the Lake District to the North, and the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland to the East.
